Music has the power to create feelings, change lives, and develop artists. The more we listen to and create music, the more we understand each other. This truly makes music the universal language! As I teach and you listen, I hope we can come to a better understanding of each other, the world around us, and how the music you create can be a positive influence in your life going forward.

As your teacher, I hope to instill a love for all types of music. The piano will be my vehicle for doing so. The piano is a versatile instrument that is included in many cultures and traditions. As you learn, I hope to reinforce the following concepts to help you become a lifelong pianist.

Rhythm - keeping a steady beat

Collaboration - duets, accompanying other instruments and vocalists

Performance - adding musicality and emotion, playing more than just notes on a page

Technique - proper fingerings, hand positions, posture, etc.

Concert Etiquette - how to perform and be respectful during performances

Music Theory - develop an understanding of how and why music sounds good

Listening - enhance critical listening skills and relate to your music

About Me

My name is Emily Goodman. I was raised in a small town in rural Idaho. When I was I2, we moved to a slightly bigger town and we inherited my great grandmother's baby grand piano. My mother introduced me to playing and my love for music grew quickly! I took piano lessons throughout my high school years. I also played piano for my high school jazz band, clarinet in concert band, conducted the pep band and marching band, and sang in several choirs. After all that musical instruction, I knew I wanted to study music in college.

I studied piano pedagogy at Brigham Young University-Idaho and received a Bachelor's Degree in Music. I have been teaching piano for 15+ years and love it. I have accompanied several choirs and soloists. I routinely hold recitals for my students in December and May. I am a member of the Piano Education Partnership (PEP) at Riverton Piano company here in Peoria, Arizona. My studio includes a piano, digital piano, and iPad to facilitate more learning and skill on the piano. I use a variety of hands-on activities and incorporate listening to music as part of my curriculum.

“Emily Goodman has been our family’s piano teacher for eight years now. She has taught 4 of our 5 children at some point in their lives. Emily is very thorough as a teacher. She puts a lot of thought into what books, methods, recital themes, and incentives she uses. She is patient yet has high expectations for her students. She has been amazing and we’ve enjoyed having her as our piano teacher.” - Heather, Parent
